    To all my wonderful fans;

    Welcome to my Winter (not holiday!) recording. It's been out of print for many years. Every year, I'm touched to hear from so many people that it's part of their yearly traditions to listen to it; I hope it becomes one of your traditions, too.

    I've gone back and recreated all the original liner notes (and added lyrics to each track).

    BONUS: If you download "The Closing of the Year", you will also receive a digital download of the original CD Liner notes and CD image!

    Best wishes (and WOOF!)

LYRICS - LITTLE JACK FROST (As recorded by Bill McKinley) Little Jack Frost get lost, get lost Little Jack Frost get lost You know you don't do a thing but put a bite on my toes Freeze up the ground and take the bloom from the rose Oh, little Jack Frost go away, go away And don't you come back another day There's lots of cold feet all the lovers complain You turned off the heat down on lover's lane The bench in the park is alone in the dark So, little Jack Frost get lost, get lost Little Jack Frost get lost So, little Jack Frost go away, go away And don't you come back another day, get gone, go 'way There's lots of cold feet, all the lovers complain You turn off the heat down in lover's lane The bench in the park is all alone in the dark So, little Jack Frost get lost, get lost Little Jack Frost get lost, get lost Little Jack Frost get lost Hit the road, Jack

LYRICS - HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS / MERRY CHRISTMAS (As recorded by Bill McKinley) Have yourself a merry little Christmas Let your heart be light From now on Our troubles will be out of sight Have yourself a merry little Christmas Make the Yuletide gay From now on Our troubles will be miles away Here we are as in olden days Happy golden days of yore Faithful friends who are dear to us Gather near to us once more Through the years we all will be together If the fates allow Hang a shining star upon the highest bough And have yourself a merry little Christmas— Merry Christmas Have a very, very merry Christmas Dream about your heart’s desire Christmas Eve when you retire Santa Claus will stop and I know he'll drop Exactly what you wanted from your chimney top So be jolly Have a holiday as gay as holly May the ones you love be near you With the laugh of friends to cheer you When the church bells ring Like the angels sing And you hear the joyful hymn they chime Hang a wish from me on your Christmas tree For a very merry Christmas time Faithful friends who are dear to us Gather near to us once more Through the years We all will be together If the fates allow So hang a shining star upon the highest bough And have yourself a merry little Christmas now

LYRICS - SECRET GARDENS (As recorded by Bill McKinley) My grandmother's house is still there But it isn't the same A plain wooden cottage A patch of brown lawn And a fence that hangs bending And sighing in the Seattle rain I drive by with strangers And wish they could see what I see A tangle of summer birds Flying in sunlight A forest of lilies An orchard of apricot trees Secret Gardens of the heart Where the flowers bloom forever I see you shining through the night In the ice and snow of winter Great grandfather's farm is still there But it isn't the same The barn is torn down And the fences are gone The Idaho wind blows The topsoil away every Spring I still see the ghosts Of the people I knew long ago Inside the old kitchen They bend and sigh My life passed them up And the world passed them by Secret Gardens of the heart Where the old stay young forever I see you shining through the night In the ice and snow of winter But most of all It is me that has changed And yet I'm still the same That's me at the weddings That's me at the graves Dressed like the people Who once looked so grown-up and brave I look in the mirror Thought the eyes of the child that was me I see willows bending The season is Spring And the silver blue sailing birds Fly with the sun on their wings Secret Gardens of the heart Where the flowers bloom forever Where the old stay young forever Where the seasons change forever I see you shining through the night In the ice and snow of winter

LYRICS - YOU MUST BELIEVE IN SPRING (As recorded by Bill McKinley) When lonely feelings chill The meadows of your mind Just think if winter comes Can spring be far behind? Beneath the deepest snows The secret of a rose Is merely that it knows You must believe in spring Just as a tree is sure Its leaves will reappear It knows its emptiness Is just a time of year The frozen mountains dreams Of April's melting streams How crystal clear it seems You must believe in spring You must believe in love And trust it's on its way Just as a sleeping rose Awaits the kiss of May So in a world of snow Of things that come and go Where what you think you know You can't be certain of You must believe in spring and love Just as a tree is sure Its leaves will reappear It knows its emptiness Is just a time of year The frozen mountains dreams Of April's melting streams How crystal clear it seems You must believe in spring You must believe in love And trust it's on its way Just as a sleeping rose Awaits the kiss of May So in a world of snow Of things that come and go Where what you think you know You can't be certain of You must believe in spring and love

LYRICS - FEED THE BIRDS (As recorded by Bill McKinley) Early each day to the steps of Saint Paul's The little old bird woman comes In her own special way to the people she calls, Come, buy my bags full of crumbs. Come feed the little birds Show them you care And you'll be glad if you do Their young ones are hungry Their nests are so bare All it takes is tuppence from you Feed the birds Tuppence a bag Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag Feed the birds That's what she cries While overhead Her birds fill the skies All around the cathedral The saints and apostles Look down as she sells her wares And although you can't see them You know they are smiling Each time someone shows that he cares Though her words Are simple and few Listen, listen She’s calling to you Feed the birds Tuppence a bag Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag Although you can't see them You know they are smiling Each time someone shows that he cares Though her words Are simple and few Listen, listen She’s calling to you Feed the birds Tuppence a bag Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag

LYRICS - THE TRUTH ABOUT CHRISTMAS (As recorded by Bill McKinley) Christmas time is almost here Presents under the tree Christmas comes but once a year And that’s enough for me Here’s the truth about Christmas There is no Santa Claus No reindeer fly him in No one’s rewarding you According to how good or bad you have been It just seems so unfair Sometimes it’s hard to bear The truth about Christmas Here’s the truth about Christmas I’m always low on cash When it comes time to shop And on the day I go There’s always snow and sleet and hail that won’t stop And sending cards required Well I’m just sick and tired That’s the truth about Christmas And then I take the plane It’s always late and crowded Two buses and a train Might be faster Though I doubt it Cause everybody in the world Has the same idea as me They think they’ll find The milk of human kindness In the bosom of their family Here’s the truth about Christmas It’s hardly ever fun Cause families always fight Though things start out alright Before the night has barely even begun They’ve had too much to drink And told you what they think That’s the truth about Christmas So why do I still care Why do I still do it Why do I keep going there And keep on struggling through it Why does hope leap in my heart When the Christmas carols start And why do I still feel a glow On Christmas Day Even knowing what I know Here’s the truth about Christmas I want it to be nice I want it to be fun And as I’ve looked around What I have found is So does everyone So Christmas makes me see That everyone’s like me The pain I’m going through is pain That they’re all feeling too And it’s so encouraging to know We all want the same thing To be loved To be happy To have hope That’s the truth about Christmas Hope

LYRICS - LET ME BE THE MUSIC (As recorded by Bill McKinley) Seasons come and seasons go And somehow they were meant to show That life and love are never really gone So when my journey here is through I’m certain there is just a new hello And so when I travel on Let me be the music The music of love I have known Let me be the melodies In the wind and the trees That sing to the lost and alone Let me be the sweet refrain In the sound of the rain Or a rippling stream Let me be the lullabies That close the eyes of children When they dream For music has no walls or bars It bridges time and space It only asks the senses to surrender It sweeps us to the stars And makes us one in its embrace It has no fences It has no gender So let me be the music The beautiful music of love Let me be the voices of spring That rejoice in the things That blossom and grow Oh let me be the music To come again as music The beautiful music of love When I go Oh let me be the music of love When I go

LYRICS - THE CLOSING OF THE YEAR (As recorded by Bill McKinley) If I cannot bring you comfort Then at least I bring you hope For nothing is more precious Than the time we have And so We all must learn from small misfortunes Count the blessings that are real Let the bells ring out for Christmas At the closing of the year Let the bells ring out for Christmas At the closing of the year Now all the winter bells are ringing Hear them echo through the snow And the children's voices singing On the streets so far below This is a time to be together And the truth is somewhere here Within our love all people At the closing of the year We will walk innocent Will all of the pain And all of the patience All of the way With all of us right And all of us sane No one an island We’ll fly in arms of time Walk in the waves Never fall Don’t fall At the closing of the year If I cannot bring you comfort Then at least I bring you hope For nothing is more precious Than the time we have And so We all must learn from small misfortunes Count the blessings that are real Let the bells ring out for Christmas At the closing of the year Let the bells ring out for Christmas At the closing of the year Of the year

about

[The following liner notes are as they appeared in the original release of "The Closing of the Year" in 1997]

This album is dedicated to my dear friend Nancy LaMott.

She came into my life already an old friend, and brought so much to me. Nancy encouraged me to record my first album and mentored me in so many ways. It occurs to me that many of the wonderful people who worked on this album came to me through her. December will forever be colored by thoughts of Nancy: she loved Christmas, and December marked the day of her birth, and the day she took her leave from us, all too soon. How comforting to know that my angel on earth is now our angel in Heaven…

One of the biggest compliments you can pay me is to recommend this recording to your friends. However, if you copy it for them, you not only violate copyright laws (a lump of oil for you in your stockings), but you also deprive me (and the other artists and investors who derive their income from the sales of this album) of our livelihood (make that two lumps). PLEASE DON’T DUB! SUPPORT THE ARTS AND BUY MORE COPIES!! LOTS MORE!!!

All right, so I’m a “New York centrist”—but when I got to be friends with Bill McKinley (through our mutual friend, the wonderful, brilliant Nancy LaMott) and heard his angelic singing—I urged him to come to New Yotk to record with Chris Marlowe, Frank Fagnano, and the spectacular musicians I have had the joy and honor to work with over the years He did, and by doing so, gave me the best Christmas present I can imagine.
